How to Stay Young and Slow the Aging Process

The four secrets of successful aging are.

  • Appreciate your reality
  • Challenge your body
  • Stimulate your intellect
  • Nurture your spirit

While all are important, for the purpose of this blog, I’d like to focus on stimulating the intellect.

The qualities needed to stimulate the intellect.

  • Overall health
  • Clarity of intention
  • Level of attention

Attention to Our Intention

Maintaining our health both spiritually and physically is obvious, what’s not obvious is the clarity of intention, of our conscious will, and the level of attention, to the maintenance of our mental focus. Our brains are well-equipped and actually need to be challenged, no matter our age.

The Why Beneath the Why

Our intentions determine our experience. It’s the why beneath the why. There is a big difference between an intention to get rich and make a lot of money or to help people live a better life. Our intention affects the basic laws of Cause and Effect and Attraction. Eve, our intention is unknown to us it will always have the same consequence. If our intention is to make money, then we are only interested in ourselves, if our intention is to help someone live a better life then we are interested in others, One is based in fear and one is based in love.

Fear and Love

Fear is in pursuit of external power (money), it raises and crushes hopes, it exhilarates and disappoints, it succeeds or fails. Love is the pursuit of authentic power (a better life), it fulfills and uplifts, validates and empowers. If your intention is the pursuit of external power you will attract people who are only interested in making money, they only see the world as either win or lose. They are impatient, with expectations, needing instant gratification, and when success isn’t immediate they quit. If your intention is the pursuit of authentic power you’ll attract people who are empowered and fulfilled by uplifting others. There is no false agenda, therefore they can delay gratification. They are patient and get fulfillment through the incremental improvement of themselves and others.

Learning Easier The Ever

Attention to your intention, will improve the experience, when learning new skills or a body of knowledge. There are many ways to gain knowledge. In my blog, “The Future of Learning”, I wrote “Technology is making it possible now for those that can, to also teach.
The future of Learning in the 21st Century is where successful entrepreneurs will use a Mastermind approach, utilizing internet communities, workshops and groups to teach their targeted market the skills they currently use. They will either promote themselves, virtually or in person, as the expert, reporter or broker of the skills desired.”

It Takes a Community

Web sites like Wealthy Affiliates.com are examples of an internet community, created by entrepreneurs, to teach others the skills they have. To be a member of such a community and to learn a new skill set, it’s important to manage our emotions. Emotions and intellect are tightly interwoven. By becoming aware of our emotions we realize that we can control them only by being mindful of them. It’s through mindfulness that we begin to subordinate our reflexive emotional reactions.

Emotions

Doing something meaningful and having a sense of purpose, strongly influences our emotional state. The satisfaction you gain by doing something meaningful, gives you self-definition, builds self-esteem and keeps you young. Without a sense of purpose, negative emotions like worry, anxiety, depression, and loneliness can go unchecked. Having these emotions ages you.

Challenge Yourself

By challenging ourselves to learn new skills and knowledge, we better appreciate the world, and our place in it. To many allow themselves to come to a virtual intellectual standstill, by the absence of a meaningful challenge. This absence of a challenge kills the desire to know and leads to depression and an overall depreciation in mental dexterity, and we age. Learning new skills brings freedom and a challenging state of mind, that improves our ability to solve problems. When learning stops, time closes around us, and we age.

The Mind of God

In the book by Maxwell Maltz called “Psycho-Cybernetics”. He talked about identifying erroneous and restrictive programming embedded in the self-image and that we could systematically alter it to better suit our purposes. I was reminded of the mind being of two parts, psychology and skills. 20% was skill based, gathering info and 80% was psychology based, controlling behavior and emotions. He talked about the mind being an automatic success mechanism and how it was important to get the conscious mind in line with the unconscious mind. We do this by using our imagination to set the goal (picture) then letting the automatic mechanism work on it.

The Map is Not the Territory

In relating a story about a successful sales man, he explained that the salesman didn’t see failure as a blow to the ego but as a learning tool. He also said that we have a mental image of ourselves and the world and people around us, and that we behave as though these images are true. See the supposition “the map is not the territory” in my blog on Neuro Linguistic Programming. He goes into recognizing how negative self talk imprints into our subconscious mind (that doesn’t know it’s not real). I wrote a blog on how this can be the hardest habit a person can ever break. Maltz went on to talk about how failure is only an opinion and not a fact and only calls for adjustments and re calibration. You can do this through visualization.

Picture in your Mind

The mind thinks in pictures, not words. As we vividly picture in our minds what we desire, it will become a reality. Create an exciting picture of the future. Most people don’t have a clear picture of what they want. At best, it’s fuzzy. Write down the most important reasons for accomplishing your goal, and the biggest benefit you will receive upon completion. Big reasons keep you young, and are the driving force that keeps you going, when the going gets tough. We are able to stay young and slow the aging process by creating goals and having big reasons in achieving them. Successfully accomplishing your goals takes energy, effort and concentrated thinking. That’s why it’s important to be connected to what you’re working towards and it shouldn’t be only about money!

Your Goals Should Be,

  1. Yours
  2. Meaningful.
  3. Specific and measurable.
  4. Flexible.
  5. Challenging and exciting.
  6. In alignment with your core values.
  7. Well balanced.
  8. Contributing to society.
  9. Realistic.
  10. Supported

Cause and Effect

It is a wonderful experience and a great adventure to make conscious use of knowledge. To have a goal that we can plant in our mind and see it gradually take form. Taking something from our imagination and turning it into a reality, is what gives pleasure. Age is a state of mind using our imagination and creative powers keeps us young. We imagine a goal and use our intelligence to create it. It’s the Law of Cause and Effect.

Before Christianity; The Gita and The Tao

This unique religion caters to the Material as well as the Spiritual needs of everyone including theists and atheists alike. It’s universality makes it unique among the eminent sacred works of the world. It’s unique in that it rises above temporal questions and reveals the dynamic way by which man may achieve perfection of the self and final absolution.

The Bhagavad Gita was written between 400BC and 200AD like the Vedas and the Upanishads the authorship is unclear, although many credit Vyasa, a man more legend then actual historical figure.

Interestingly the Tao Te Ching, the classic Taoist text written in 400BC or even as early as 500BC, also has an unclear authorship, though many credit Lao Tzu, a man also more legend then historical figure.

Both the devotion to God implored in the Bhagavad Gita and the embrace of the Way (of God) explained in the Tao Te Ching are meant to bring a person closer to perfection.Indifference to Duality is evident in both the Gita and the Tao. Both texts also insinuate that the physical world is an illusion. Paradoxically both texts seem to offer wisdom that is unreachable, but at the same time imperishable.

In both your challenge is to take a good look at the way you’ve been living and to weed out old habits and beliefs that once fortified your ego but no longer serve you. They both stress the importance of working on the mind, our ways of thinking and our emotional responses to life, such as an abusive or lifeless relationship, an addiction, a history of powerlessness, overwork, or the glare of self-hatred, for example.

As you do this, you’re left to face the great canyon of emptiness that lies underneath. While it can be frightening, facing this inner void clears the slate, making way for change and regeneration. They both stress that it’s only by perfecting the soul within, that our outer environment can be perfected.

In the Gita the tasks of facing the Underworld and your shadow provoke the Kleshas, especially the one called Abhinivesha, which is (a fear of death and the tendency to cling to life). Though painful, the death of the ego is essential so that, like the mythical phoenix, you can rise from the ashes and come to life again in a more mature form.

The suffering and death of the Klesha, Asmita (the Ego), breaks through the defensive structures that frame our personalities, so we can get closer to our souls. The contraction and suffering experienced with the death of the ego can close your heart and make you feel dry, barren, and exiled. This may seem like a spiritual wasteland, but it’s one of the richest and most verdant paths of your awakening.

Although you might not yet see it, the seeds of your new self are sprouting beneath the soil of your awareness. This is often when the Klesha, Avidya (ignorance or delusion) is stimulated: You can’t see what you’ll grow into. You may also have trouble recognizing the last stage of your transition for what it is.

Finally, after all this waiting, you are reborn. This is when the Klesha called Raga (attachment to pleasure) gets stirred up. Now that you’ve moved away from suffering and death, you’re loath to re-experience it. You may rush to form an attachment to your new identity.

Yet if you’re interested in spiritual development, you don’t want to get too comfortable. If spiritual maturity is truly your priority, you must be ready to leave the comfort zone and begin again and again, as many times as it takes. Don’t get distracted by the siren song of Raga.

A spiritual initiation of the Tao is like a carving knife—it cuts and pierces, but also refines and reshapes you. It allow you to reinvent yourself completely, to give yourself over to something greater. There are windows through which you can glimpse who you really are and what’s possible for you. They’re not just an emotional necessity; they’re a spiritual imperative.

As you learn to recognize and accept the extraordinary power of change in both the Gita and the Tao, and develop the art of surrender, you’ll be rewarded with an awakening of the natural alignment between body, mind, and spirit that already exists within you.

As always, thanks for visiting. Dave

Welcome

Hello, my name is Dave, and welcome to my smarterfittness website. Being a Baby Boomer I’ve seen the world change and as such I’ve had to change.

Open To Change

I have always believed that I was open to change. Imagine my surprise when it finally dawned on me that not only did I resist change I was opposed to it I was and still am, I’m defiant and a slow learner. But  to be inflexible , stiff and unbending was to die, to be loose, flexible, supple was to live.Over the last 35 years give or take, I’ve changed my beliefs on a number of fronts

It Starts With The Body

The first major change came with regards to Physical Fitness, over the years I’ve belonged to all types of Gyms and Health Clubs, across the country. I’ve seen the industry change and become Big Business, both with regard to the role of trainers and the wide range of equipment and services now available.

I want to dispel some myths about what it takes to get in shape and stay in shape, and how you can accomplish this.

What Are You Addicted To?

The Second major change was with my Addictive Personality, give me something that changes the way I feel and I’ll abuse it. It was hard to admit to being Alcoholic, mentally programed to self sabotage not only my life, but the lives of everyone who came near me.

Realizing that recovery is more the just “putting a plug in the jug”. That a “Lack of Power was my Dilemma” and it took me ten years to figure it out. I know why recovery rates are so low.

What Do You Believe?

The Third major change was with regards to my Belief Systems, and the realization that almost everything I believed in was wrong, based on my inability to accurately perceive the world.

The realization that I was a Narcissist, this anti-social disorder, infects everyone, with your own dense pain body. Key reason why people stay in addiction.

True Happiness

The fourth major Change came with regards to what it means to be happy. In the world of Form everything is dying and that you have to go to the world of Spirit to find happiness. We have a boundless supply of intellectual curiosity and creativeness.

Find your passion, be curious and create. Don’t die with your story inside you.

I want to show how we grow down not up,and bring back a feeling of destiny. this feeling has been lost in so many peoples lives and what must be recovered is a sense that there is a reason we are here. Self actualization is Gods Will for us, the only thing holding us back is a belief that we don’t deserve it.

Why do I want to help people?

I want to help others recognize and repair the damage of having dis-empowering beliefs, not only about the world but about ourselves.

I know this for sure, everyone resists change, if we don’t make staying in shape  an enjoyable experience, we simply will not do it over the long term. No matter what anyone says.

Addictions come in many forms and act to distract us from our feelings. The most basic being, that we are not smart enough or deserving enough.

Our beliefs define us and until we become aware of our thinking we can’t and wont change it.

I believe that their is a best selling book in everyone. Don’t die with your story still inside you.

The goal of this site

All the best,

Dave
