Lived a Mediocre Life
There are any number of reasons, that Baby Boomers are not retiring when they could, and it doesn’t have anything to do with fear of out living our money. It’s a fear that you might die with your dream still inside you. Ever have that feeling that you lived a mediocre life? A life that just moved along with you in it. Think back and you probably had no idea that you would spend a large part of your life, doing what you did.
Found your Career by Luck
I read somewhere, that 75% of men, find, what turns out to be their career job, simply by luck. Being in the right or wrong place at the right or wrong time. No planning, no thought out career search, just plan old luck. And in most cases because it was easy and paid decen(or at least what you’d accept), you ended up staying there for 10,20 and maybe 30 years. The years just kinda moved along taking you with them.
We are all creatures of habit, and we all resist change. In a lot of cases change is either forced on us or the pain of not changing gets so bad that we have to change. But we don’t really like it. What’s behind it, fear, of the unknown, but basically it’s fear of ourselves. That we won’t make the right decision or trusting any decision we might make. And where did this fear come from? It came from your parents, who quite by accident planted the ideas in your mind, that your not lucky, and that it’s who you know, not what you know, to accept the status quo, don’t rock the boat, be happy with what you got, and the most devastating one, your not smart enough. These ideas, as innocent as they were, when first broached, over time, have become beliefs. Beliefs that you might not even be aware that you carry, until now.
What About the Dream
So now your retired, from that mediocre career, and the thought crosses your mind what now? And the longer you sit around doing nothing, the stronger the feeling gets, that there has to be more to life them this. But you can’t figure out what you want to do next. If your in that position you might want to take a look at your beliefs. You know those nice warm beliefs, youv’e been holding forever. Their like old friends you wouldn’t think of giving up. Well lets review some of these old friends and see if they are really serving us.
Belief; Nobody cares what I think or would be Interested.
I firmly believe that everyone has a best-selling book, hidden inside them. The idea that nobody would be interested in your story is a dis-empowering belief, that only you are holding. We watch TV everyday filled with stories that people, just like us, have made up, and half the time we think it’s crap. We watch the talking heads and wonder to ourselves or out loud, how in the world did that person get on TV ? Well the reason we are watching, them is that they believed they could do it.
Experts say that creativity is contained within the dark side of our personalities. Use the fear and judgment to fuel your creativity. Let your fears bring out the story your’e always wanted to tell. Allow yourself to be vulnerable, it’s what people want. Aren’t you tired of the same old sequel or a rehash of the same old theme over and over? Today more them ever before book publishers are looking for original content. They are so desperate, that they will even publish a book for free. The means of achieving this are becoming more accessible by the day.
Belief; I Don’t know how
The qualities that people are looking for today are stories that are authentic, unique and real with honesty and vulnerability. If they also include a desire to help or inform, them you have a winning combination. People are fed up with being marketed to by hip slick Madison avenue ad agencies that push out the same rehashed shit year after year.
Today, individuals have the ability of getting information in front of millions of people. This personal mass media power was only available to corporations and the well-connected just a decade ago. Now we all carry access to millions in our pants pocket or purse. The cell phone with its access to the internet gives you mass media power unthought of 10 years ago. It fills me with wonder and jealousy, what the next 10 or 20 years will bring.
Belief; I’m not Smart Enough
Knowledge has never been more accessible. With access to the internet you can literally tap into resources unimaginable even 10 years ago. You have the time, your retired right. Find that niche, something your passionate about and start telling the world about it, just like you’d tell a friend. The funny thing about becoming a best-selling author is that the more obscure the topic, the easier it is to become a best-seller. Becoming a best-seller, immediately gives you credibility in your niche, and with credibility comes traffic.
Belief; It sounds like a lot of Work
Finding a niche your passionate about, takes the word work out of the equation, and replaces it with play. Alan Watts said that the goal of every man should be to find a way to get paid to play. To immerse yourself in a passion, to look forward to bringing it into reality step by step, to imagine and them create, is truly what we were meant to do.
If this sounds simple it is, I write in a simple style, because I’m not a professional writer. I’m a Boomer just like you, that believes that the universe was designed to grow man. It can’t help but grow whatever you plant, just like fertile soil, if you plant a seed it grows it, it doesn’t have a choice. We were given the choice to decide what we plant. Philosophers throughout history all say the same thing, “as man believes so shall he be”.
Evaluate some beliefs you’re holding, beliefs that were handed down to you by your parents, always believing that they did the best they could with the tools they had. If you believe that you’re deserving of only a little happiness and a little prosperity, them that’s what the universe will provide. It’s a simple matter of cause and effect. Your beliefs (thoughts) are the cause and your life is the effect.
Scarcity and limitation was not our creators intent for us. God’s will was always that man be happy and prosper. If your not happy and dreading the next 10 or 20 years, them you have allowed some dis-empowering thoughts to creep into your mind. It’s not important, how they got there, what is important is being aware they are there. Use them as fuel to power you into self actualization, as Maslow said “once you think you can, you must.
I’m developing this Website specifically for Boomers like me, to discuss and analyze any number of the dis-empowering beliefs that we have latched on to, and to pull them out by there roots.
As always, thanks for visiting. Dave
